Pont du Bir-Hakeim

My favorite of the 37 bridges over the Seine in Paris is the Pont du Bir-Hakeim which connects the 15th and 16th arrondissements and was completed in 1905.

What makes the bridge my favorite is the awesome equestrian statue which seemingly points towards the Eiffel Tower. The statue’s name is Monument de la France Renaissante or the Monument of French Resistance. It originally was supposed to represent Joan of Arc, but after the Second World War, it was changed to represent the spirit of French Resistance during that era.

The bridge gets its name from a battle of the same name in WW2 when Free French forces fought the Axis powers at the oasis of that name in Libya.

I was going to ask my wife to marry me at the lookout that surrounds the monument but it was too crowded that day so instead, I asked her on the banks of the Seine below the Eiffel Tower and just down the stairs from Pont du Bir-Hakeim. You can see the statue and the bridge in the background of the picture below.
