Dispersed Camping Near Organ Pipe Cactus
While there are a lot of spots at the Twin Peaks Campground, they are not my type of camping spots. So when I visited the National Monument I set my sights on the first come fist serve Alamo Canyon Campground up above the Ajo Mountain Drive off of Highway 85. Unfortunately, at just 4 sites total, it’s tough to snag a spot, especially at sundown. Thankfully though, a Ranger back at the Kris Eggle Visitor Center that morning had told me about some dispersed camping spots just north of the entrance that’s on BLM land. So that’s where I headed. While you don’t need 4WD, you do need a High Clearance Vehicle. Once I arrived I headed pretty far back into the desert until the trail became bumpier and the spots more dispersed. It was there I found the perfect evening camp amongst tall Saguaros far off from the road and other campers I’d passed along the way. Obviously, the sunset was truly breathtaking and the evening was comfortable with my tall Saguaro sentries standing guard.
