Jemez Historic Site

The Jemez Historic Site is a combination of the ruins of the Giusewa Pueblo and San Jose Mission located in the beautiful Jemez Mountains of New Mexico on State Road 4. The Site’s open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm and it costs $7 a person and it’s absolutely worth the short self guided tour through the beautiful ruins. Mountains, the beautiful forest, and red rocks tower around the site as you are transported back in time.

The area is known as the San Diego Canyon and the ancestors of the people of the Jemez Pueblo built this city 700 years ago complete with kivas and the multi roomed pueblo buildings. Once the Spanish arrived they attempted to convert the people and forced them to build a rather large and beautiful church for the area. The whole site was abandoned after the Pueblo Revolt in the 1680s.
