Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

Anza-Borrego sits just east of the coastal mountains in Southern California and it is one big State Park. In fact, it’s the biggest state park in the large state of California. It’s got slot canyons, caves, badlands, multiple mountain ranges, palm studded oases, 4WD Roads, tons of hikes, plenty of desert foliage, lots of solitude, dark night skies, awe-inspiring viewpoints, more than enough camping spots, and some truly wonderful curvy switchbacky roads. This place has it all and I can’t wait to visit it again.

I wasn’t kidding about the roads, they are very sharp and steep and there are tons of motorcycles and Jeeps so be patient and aware but definitely have some fun because these roads are some of my new favorites to race through. But, I once had to wait half an hour as a tow truck cleared two wrecked motorcycles from the roadway of 78. It ain’t like there’s an alternative route. Also know that dogs are not allowed on any trails and for good reason. It is a hot, dry, dusty, sandy, prickly, sharp, and rocky place with spines everywhere and potential rattlers under every rock. It really ain’t a place for your dog friend. That being said, if you do have to bring your pup, make sure you have more than enough water and that you don’t leave ‘em in your hot vehicle for more than a moment.

The park is large enough to span multiple ranges, valleys, washes, and landscapes so be sure to see as much as you can in this unique Southern California getaway. And as always, make sure you catch the sunrises and sunsets.
