Giant Sequoia National Monument

1.5 Mile Roundtrip

The Trail of 100 Giants is an amazing 1.5 mile paved hike through a grove of enormous Sequoia Trees at the southern end of the Giant Sequoia National Monument. Dogs are allowed if on a leash on this fun and awe inspiring trail that leads you through the huge towering giants. The fee is $12 as of June, 2022.

You’ll get to run around inside the trees, see the glass like tannin that heals the tree and keeps it from deteriorating (one dead tree’s been found to be 10,000 years old but it still hadn’t decomposed or fossilized), sit atop an injured and healed tree, see a limb that fell and impaled the earth where it still protrudes out of today, and marvel at the tree’s surprisingly shallow root system for how enormous they are. Some of the trees are 2,000 years old and they grow in a narrow but long 20 mile wide by 260 mile stretch of the Western Sierra Nevadas.

If you’re coming from the south you’ll follow the Kern River up and into the mountains where you’ll wind your way through forests of fresh and burned trees and gorgeous meadow valleys. It’s a magical and whimsical place that absolutely deserves a respectful visit. Be sure to take your time, take it all in, and take great care to preserve the beautiful place.
