Scenic Byway 24
Scenic Byway 24 in Utah runs from Interstate 70 to Interstate 70 but it goes through some of the prettiest scenery in the American Southwest. The highway takes you past Goblin Valley State Park, The San Rafael Swell, Factory Butte in Hanksville, through Capitol Reef National Park, & so much more. It's a favorite road of mine in Utah and one I'll never get tired of traveling on.
If you start at the eastern section of the road, you’ll exit 70 just east of Green Valley and head south through the San Rafael Desert with the San Rafael Swell to your right, the whole time. That beautiful upward anticline hides all sorts of archaeological, geological, and adventurous treasures within its folds, canyons, & secrets. Including these pictographs near Temple Mountain & Goblin Valley State Park.
Of course, Goblin Valley is worth a visit every time you pass. The place is a playground of hoodoos, goblins, and amazing views. It’s also a fantastic place to camp for the evening. If you’re lucky enough to make it to a great vantage point, you can even view the San Rafael Swell and the San Rafael Desert in all its beauty.
From Goblin Valley, the views of the Henry Mountains are amazing. You can also view Factory Butte, Brigham Butte, Temple Mountain, and various other hoodoos, formations, and that ever present San Rafael Swell. There is even a spot you can pull over and look through some viewing tubes to see these formations.
In Hanksville, be sure to stop at the awesome Hollow Mountain Store and Gas Station. You can’t miss it with its dinosaurs and pictographs. Then you’ll be heading west past Factory Butte and tons of places for OHVs while following the Fremont River.
Next you enter the most beautiful stretch, the Capitol Reef National Park part of the awesome highway. You’ll pass through the San Rafael Swell, past Cathedral Valley, the Notom-Bullfrog Road, and once in the park, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the wonderland of adventure that is Capitol Reef. A must see on the highway is the petroglyph panel!
From Capitol Reef you can head south on Scenic Byway 12 (an even more incredible and beautiful road than even this one) if the weather hasn’t closed it. And it is that very reason that I have continued on 24. I had to go 4 hours out of the way to get to Boulder, Utah instead of going 1 hour south on 12 because Boulder Mountain was getting pounded by snow. Therefore, I've seen Highway 24 from Torrey to Burrville passing through countless Mormon cattle towns with grid streets surrounding the LDS church buildings and stacks of hay in each field. From Burrville, the highway is a mystery to me but it goes through National Forest land north until it hits I-70 again near Sigurd & Salina.
