Boca Negra Canyon

The Boca Negra Canyon Section of Petroglyph National Monument is a great place to see over 100 images in less than an hour. There are three short trails at Boca Negra Canyon: Mesa Point Trail (1,056 ft, steep, 20 minutes), Macaw Trail (178 ft, 5 minutes), & Cliff Base Trail (803 ft, 10 minutes).

The Mesa Point Trail allows you to see plenty of lizard, bird, and Kachina glyphs. At the top you’ll also get a great view of the Sandia Mountains.

The Macaw Trail (5 minute paved walk) will let you see the awesome Mesoamerican Bird etched into a rock. Find out why that’s so interesting and important by listening to my podcast series over the Ancestral Puebloans and the Anasazi: The Ancient Ones.

The 803 ft Cliff Base Trail has more petroglyphs and black rock views and takes no time at all to complete.
