Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks
Pine Tree Trail: 4.6 Mile Loop Trail
1,049 Feet Elevation Gain
High above the Chihuahuan Desert Floor is the Organ Pipe Mountains which reach 9,000 feet and contain jagged peaks, steep canyons, and awesome views. The road up to the Pine Tree Trail on the eastern side of the mountains is a fun and winding route that takes you higher until you reach the parking lot where you’ll begin the 4.6 mile loop trail that takes you further up the side of the mountains before you descend back to your vehicle again.
This is one of my favorite hikes of all time and it offers incredible views. You can see the White Sands National Park that spread throughout the Tularosa Basin, the awesome imposing jagged Organ Mountains, the San Andres Mountains, the distant Sierra Blanca Mountains, and the missile testing facilities of the White Sands Missile Range. It isn’t a difficult hike either, although it does involve some elevation change but the 4.6 miles goes by quickly.
Just down the mountain slope from the Pine Tree Trail is the White Sands Missile Range Museum which offers a look at the American Military’s wide range of experimental and operational missiles since their inception during WWII. It is truly worth a visit. You’ll see UFO shaped weapons, replicas of the devastating atomic bomb droppers, and a ton of other weapons throughout all eras of American Military Imperialism.
The National Monument also offers quite a bit of camping opportunities on both sides of the mountains. At the trailhead for the Pine Tree Trail is the Aguirre Spring Campground which has 55 first come first serve sites. On the other side of the mountains are three areas of dispersed camping that are available.
