4WD Vulcan Line Road
This 4WD Road that I am calling the Vulcan Mine Line Road (because the Vulcan Mine is near it and it follows the power lines) can barely be called a road and SHOULD NOT be driven with anything other than a lifted JEEP and by someone who knows what they're doing. It is washed out and bumpy and steep so 4WD and possibly 4WD Low is necessary. It's miserable and no fun.
If you approach it from the East, like I did, it’s fine as it slowly rises over the basin and you can see quite far to the east and south and the Providence Mountains to the north tower over you. It’s a little bumpy at times but no big deal. And then you get to the top and still, it ain’t bad. It’s only at the descent as you head westward towards the Kelso Dunes does it get ridiculous and rutted and very rocky.
DO NOT DRIVE THIS ROAD IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR FUN.
There are some seriously steep downward and upward portions on loose rock and sand and at times I had no control over the direction I was crawling down. It was ugly, kinda scary, and my wife was NOT happy. I don’t blame her. You’ve been warned.
Thankfully my truck only had some cosmetic damage. Exhibit A: Bent Step Bar
This guy was definitely judging us for our hubris.
