Ryan Mountain Trail

2.9 Miles Roundtrip

Steep Consistent Hike To A 360° View Of Both Halves Of The Park

Ryan Mountain Trail is my favorite hike in Joshua Tree and at 2.9 miles, it’s a breeze… albeit a breeze that spends 1.4 miles going straight up on an exquisitely engineered trail filled with steps and gorgeous views. Once at the very top those views include a breathtaking 360° lookout over the park.

It may be straight up but it isn’t too steep and every second spent taking a break affords a wonderful view of either Horse or Queen Valley. In the distance you can see forests of Joshua Trees, piles of scattered boulders and rocks, and towering mountains. Sunrise is a great time to head up the mountain before it’s too hot if you hike in the summer and you’ll be treated to an astoundingly awesome show of the sun rising over the many layers of mountains.

There are a few little Joshua Trees towards the top of the trail and some Cholla with some Prickly Pears sprinkled in for an exciting assortment of desert foliage. And always be on the lookout for snakes and if you hike at night before the sunrise or after the sunset be warned that the number of tarantulas is quite high on this hike. If you’re hiking during the day you’ll notice the many spider holes along the trail. Make sure to let them sleep.
