Sage Creek Campground
The Sage Creek Campground is a First-Come-First-Serve Campground with 22 spots on the western side of the Badlands Wilderness Area of the Park on Sage Creek Road. It is a fantastic campground that rings around a Prairie Dog Colony. It’s on a dirt road that can sometimes be impassible after a rainy storm or snow.
There is a very good chance that a Bison will wander through your camp or nearby, so be on the lookout! The Prairie Dogs were chasing each other and chirping and running and fighting and stealing food. You had to really watch out for em. They even were begging!
There are also numerous trails around the campsite to get a great view of the surrounding Badlands landscape. There are no fires allowed and no generators, so it’s quiet. There are pit toilets but no water. Each campsite gets a little covered picnic table, which is nice.
When I stayed at the campsite, it was in early July and a nice but violent and quite scary thunderstorm rolled in, complete with hail. We had to hide in my truck until it passed. The wind for the rest of the night was a vortex.
